The driver isn’t the only person in the car that can put you in danger!
Government researchers found more than 1 in 5 high school students and middle schoolers ride in cars while others are smoking.
This is especially bad cause research shows cars are potentially more dangerous than all those smoke-filled bars and parks that have been all but eliminated in certain cities.
The study’s lead author, Brian King, says:
“There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke. The car is the only source of exposure for some of these children, so if you can reduce that exposure, it’s definitely advantageous for health.”
The CDC advises parents to not allow smoking in their homes and cars, and says opening a car window will not protect kids from cigarette smoke inside.
It’s not likely your teen is gonna turn down a ride home from school just cause someone in the car is smoking, so make sure to tell them to roll down the window.
