Taylor Swift has some inneresting ideas about marketing to say the least…
She dropped a new album, and then pulled all her music off Spotify.
That’s kinda the exact opposite of what you might expect a normal person to do! You know, because Spotify claims they’ve paid over $2 billion in royalties!
Regardless, Taylor still doesn’t believe the streaming music service fairly compensates artists.

But how much money would a top-earning single actually make? At Spotify’s stated payout of $0.006 to $0.0084 per stream, the top artists from October (when Swift pulled her music) made a TON of money!

Taylor Swift is number one. Oh and look, she made between $280,000 and $390,000!!
Not only does seem like a streaming service pays pretty well (if you’re a monster star!), but it also helps get your music into fans’ hands… and those hands just might buy tickets to your show… and some merch while they’re at it…

So, we’re learning some things from a music industry insider and expert on the situation.:
[The] numbers you posted are what the “trade holders” get which means the labels. The songwriters, producers and artists make just fractions of that.
… That’s why Taylor is standing up against free on demand streaming. The majors all struck this deals with Spotify and the artists have zero control to pull their music however, Taylor being on an indie label, she was able to pull her’s off.
So in other words, it’s seemingly less about Spotify itself, and more about the labels taking more than their fair share — though, we’re sure Spotify could stand to make some tweaks to where their money is going as well!
We’re just bummed because a lot of fans out there use this method to discover new and exciting music in an affordable way. We really do hope the producers and artists start getting what they deserve from all across the board — from shows and merch too!
If Taylor’s stand helps that happen, then more power to her! Just keep the fans in mind too!
