We kind of thought this matter was settled. A source said Travis Kelce had already made up his mind not to retire. And when asked about his future plans during Super Bowl press night, he said he would be “hopefully still playing football” three years from now!
But did the actual game change all that??
The Kansas City Chiefs lost badly to the Philadelphia Eagles, 22-40 in the end. But it was worse than the score tells it. The Chiefs got a big fat ZERO points in the entire first half, with Trav missing his only two catches. It was demoralizing. No two ways about it.

After the loss, QB Patrick Mahomes dutifully answered all the questions reporters had. And some wanted to know if Trav was going to retire. If the answer was a definite NO, as we thought, he could have just said that, right? But he didn’t. Instead he said he would “let Travis make that decision on his own” — implying he hasn’t made the decision for sure yet, despite his previous comments. Damn!
Instead, Mahomes’ comments really sounded like a man describing a teammate who wouldn’t be coming back:
“He’s given so much to this team and to the NFL. And he’s been such a joy, not only for me to work with, but for people to watch.”
So emotional! And very past tense, right?? He also noted how much work it would be if he decided to stay:
“He knows he still has a lot of football left in him. I mean, you can see it, he always makes plays in the biggest moments. Um, but it’s if he wants to put in that grind. It’s a grind to go out there and play 20 games, whatever it is if we get to the Super Bowl.”
Not to mention all the practices and workouts! It’s a hell of a lot more work than doing TV and going on tour with Taylor Swift, we can tell you that! Pat noted his friend has “done enough to get a gold jacket” and that he’ll “be a first-ballot Hall of Famer” even if he ends his career now. That all sounds like he’s leaning retirement, right?? But Mahomes ended by giving hope to fans of watching Trav play, saying:
“But I know he still has a love for the game, and he’ll get to spend some time with his family and make that decision on his own.”
Damn. We were so sure he’d already made the decision! See Pat’s full answer (below):
