Well, that was a choice.
German figure skater Nicole Schott caught the attention of social media during her head-turning free skate at the 2018 Winter Olympics Friday morning in South Korea — and no, not the good kind of attention.
The 21-year-old gracefully skated to the score from Schindler’s List — Steven Spielberg‘s Oscar-winning 1993 film following German-occupied Poland during WWII — and the creative choice caused Twitter to light up with fury.

Reactions to the performance varied from feeling disrespected, to uber awkward, to pure profanity-laden confusion (courtesy of the people’s commentator, Leslie Jones.)
While some responders tried to calm down the internet, reminding them that it’s somewhat common in the sport to use the evocative Schindler’s List score, most were ready to call in Tonya Harding to teach Schott a history lesson.
Do YOU think this is in bad taste? See the reactions (below) and share your thoughts in the comments!
Maybe don’t skate to the theme from Schindler’s List if you’re from Germany. It’s just a little bit #Awkward. #Olympics https://t.co/VgVlBfgfY6

And that’s a very sorrowful piece of music. If you don’t have a plan for how to use those emotions it is maybe a sign that this isn’t a great music choice?

It is surprisingly somewhat common in the sport to use music from Schindler’s list. https://t.co/KOHMUJv2II

As someone who has a master’s in holocaust studies, I’m unsure how I feel about a German skater using Schindler’s List

A German figure skater using a song from Schindler’s List feels like something that should have been caught by one of the first 55,000 people it would have had to go through to get here.

Some users pointed out that Schott’s performance was likely out of respect:
Oskar Schindler was German, just like the figure skater, and he was a hero. Shes paying tribute to a great German. Stop trying to be offended.

There’s been a couple of songs with a holocaust reference (one being Chopin nocturne no 20 in C minor on violin) it’s not the first time either, but I wouldn’t look at it as disrespectful unless she was trying to mock it (performances are more a sign of respect). Jmho.

But we think this tweet captures the internet’s consensus:
first of all, nobody should skate to schindler’s list. second of all, some people REALLY shouldn’t skate to schindler’s list.

At least Fergie‘s sultry National Anthem performance is no longer the creative misfire of the week.
