Such a horrible tragedy at the hands of an unapologetic, self-appointed, over-eager neighborhood watch leader. We can’t even handle the fact that nobody in the local authorities will look into it — because the shooter claims it was self defense.
Even though Trayvon Martin was just holding skittles and a drink.
Luckily, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division and the FBI are going to investigate!
Here’s what the County State Attorney had to say:
“I share in the desire of the family and the community to accurately collect and evaluate all the facts surrounding the tragic death of Trayvon Martin. That is why I directed the expeditious review of the investigation which was delivered by the Sanford Police Department one week ago today….I will also be utilizing the investigative resources of the Seminole County Grand Jury which will be called to session on Tuesday, April 10, 2012.’’
Here’s what the Justice Department says:
“The department will conduct a thorough and independent review of all of the evidence and take appropriate action at the conclusion of the investigation. The department also is providing assistance to and cooperating with the state officials in their investigation into the incident. With all federal civil rights crimes, the government must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a person acted intentionally and with the specific intent to do something which the law forbids — the highest level of intent in criminal law. Negligence, recklessness, mistakes and accidents are not prosecutable under the federal criminal civil rights laws.”
We can’t tell you how happy it makes us that others are going to look into this. It’s a shame so much time has passed — who knows how accurate all the evidence is too.
Either way, something is being done. Finally.
