Not a dry eye in the house…
On Tuesday, at Universal Music Group Nashville‘s two-hour showcase at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, Vince Gill debuted an emotional song called Forever Changed based on his own personal experience with sexual abuse.

Though the tune was written a few years ago, the country singer performed it for the first time in front of Country Radio Seminar attendees, in light of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements.
Although the track is told from a female perspective, the 60-year-old revealed to the solemn crowd it was inspired by an incident he endured in middle school with his gym teacher.
According to Rare Country, Gill confessed:
“Maybe this song came from a personal experience for me. I was in seventh grade and a young, dumb kid… I had a gym teacher that acted inappropriately towards me and was trying to do things that I didn’t know what the hell was going on… I just jumped up and I ran. I don’t know why. I don’t think I ever told anybody my whole life. Even what’s been going on has been giving me a little bit of courage to speak up too.”
In the powerful song, the musician depicts the emotional turmoil that sexual assault survivors can go through:
“Too afraid to tell someone/ You might as well have used a gun/ She cries to Jesus to ease the pain/ Because of you/ She’s forever changed“
At the end of his performance, which was dedicated to “all the people that are hurting,” Gill received a standing ovation.
