VOTE: Did Justin Bieber Steal A Beat From Asher Monroe On His New Song 'Running Over'?

Justin Bieber accused of stealing song from Asher Monroe.

Fans have been waiting a long time for a new studio album from Justin Bieber and the singer finally delivered on Friday, just in time for Valentine’s Day!

It’s been less than 24 hours since Changes hit the airwaves but it’s already courting controversy! After giving it a listen, many have pointed out that a song called Running Over sounds almost identical to a 2019 track by Asher Monroe called Synergy.

This isn’t the first time fans, songwriters, or another artist has accused a performer of plagiarism; as you’ll probably recall, we even saw Lizzo get called out last year over a stolen line from her hit song Truth Hurts. Most of the time, there’s a little wiggle room to dispute similarities in music but we have to say, this accusation of stealing feels more clear cut than most!

Shortly after the Biebs’ alum dropped, listeners flocked to Twitter and flat out accused him of stealing from Monroe. Give the clip (below) a listen for yourself:

Uh… wow. These tracks sound way too similar for this to be a coincidence. This isn’t even sampling. In our humble opinion, it definitely sounds like Justin stole Asher’s beat for his song and didn’t give Monroe any credit whatsoever. Not cool, dude!

Monroe absolutely agrees he was the victim of musical theft and took to his Instagram to call out the Purpose singer and his manager Scooter Braun for ripping him off. On his IG story, he wrote:

“Hey @justinbieber This is my beat! @scooterbraun Really guys??”

The 31-year-old followed up with another post, sharing a clip of the songs in question played one after the other so his followers could decide for themselves:

In his caption, Asher said he’s not trying to “hate” but expressed his frustration over the situation:

“I’m flattered , shocked and pissed off all at the same time. I released #Synergy back in May of 2019. @justinbieber released his album today with a song called “Running Over” that sounds identical to my song “Synergy”. Feel free to comment your thoughts below. I’m not here to hate. I’m here to set the record straight! #Elev8ted #Synergy ?”

Ugh. We truly can’t blame him for feeling this way! When you’re not as popular or backed by a big label like Justin is, it can be challenging to stand up for yourself in this industry. However, it seems like Asher really has a dog in this fight and it’ll be interesting to see how JB and Scooter respond to this.

OK, now it’s time for YOU to weigh in! Tell us where you stand by voting in our poll (below):
