Sick of getting hangovers? Margaux J Rathbun of Authentic Self Wellness and Authentic Self Nutrition has some good advice for avoiding that terrible feeling the morning after.
1. Hydrate- Alcohol causes dehydration (which is why you have to pee so much while drinking). Drink a glass of water (8 ounces) for every drink you consume to avoid that terrible day-after nausea.
2. Eat protein before drinking- Eating a something rich in protein before you drink will help your body absorb the alcohol. This means you won’t get drunk as quickly (which may be exactly the opposite of what you’re trying to do, but trust us).
3. Choose light colored drinks- This may seem crazy, but drinks that are dark in color tend to have more congeners. Congeners are toxic chemicals that form during fermentation. These congeners cause the blood vessels to dilate and produce awful headaches.
4. Bundle up after drinking- The more layers the better! Alcohol dilates the blood vessels near the skin which creates the feeling that you are warm when you actually are not. If you’re in a cold place, you may not realize how chilly you’re getting. Hypothermia can cause death in really cold places.
5. Don’t take any pain relievers- Your liver is already under enough stress from your long night of drinking. Adding Tylenol or Advil to the mix can strain it even more. It might be tempting to pop pills but don’t do it!
