R.I.P.

Filed under: Exclusives! > Music Minute

About 60 people lost their jobs at Interscope and Geffen Records on Thursday when both labels merged into one, PerezHilton.com has learned. Many of those laid off had been there for years.

Yet another sign that the music industry is dead.

The biggest reason for the merger and cutbacks, we're told, is the huge failures of the Will.I.Am, Nicole Scherzinger and Eve albums, the last two which aren't even out yet.

"It cost $18 million to make and market those three albums - all bombs," a music industry source tells us. "Jimmy Iovine [the head of Interscope responsible for the layoffs] is the most hated man in music today!"

Did his wife ever divorce him for his relationship with Nicole?

What a fucking douchebag!

Nicole Scherzinger is a joke as a musician. Good thing she looks decent or else she'd probably be working at Walmart.

I love Will.I.Am, but his "I Got It From My Mama" song is fucking ridiculous. Is the creativity and spark completely gone from music?

I say the "music" industry can't die soon enough! Long live the artists-the music- but fuck the industry. They are the ones who have made it impossible for an artist to get attention without turning himself into a fucking drag queen and whoring his art out to a bunch of fucking promoters and marketing pimps.
You and Radiohead have the right approach, Perez: let the music be heard!

I was having coffee with a prominent music producer and manager years ago. The manager and I talked about the music and the horrible direction it was going in, then. The producer was making a transition into movies. Almost all the music coming out of this country is horrible, however the media is pushing crap onto the mindless demographic. Just like the target audience eats up half the crap on television. LOL. Be innovative! I am sooo happy I was a raver and got electronica music. I am glad, I grew-up in an era of individuality vs. this clone crap.

Honestly, I can see why people would not give a crap about these layoffs, but consdier this…Nicole, Wil.I.Am, and Eve didn't get laid off. Jimmy Iovine didn't get laid off. The layoffs affected people that work longer and harder hours than any of those people AND for FAR less pay. Try thinking about losing your lousy desk jobs this time of year your heartless pricks!

Its not so much that the music industry is dead, its more like they're letting "anybody" become a recording artist and plain and simple there isnt a high demand for shity music…. if these artist put out solid albums then at least there would be somewhat of a demand…. as far as nicole i think she needs to stay with the pussycat dolls, i dont think people really care for her as a solo artist…. She is very pretty but that clearly isnt enough… Will.i.am needs to just stick to Black Eyed Peas, by himself he is weak …. Fergie was an exception, she clearly had what it took to have major success as a solo artist…

Is this the same Jimmy Iovine that was part of the inspiration for Stevie Nick's song Edge of Seventeen? If so you would think he has the right background, what with his close relationship with John Lennon and his history in the industry. I find it very hard to belive it costs $18M to produce three albums but then I am not in the business. Sorry about the layoffs but that's the way it goes.

First of all, people don't enter the music business due to its stability and potential for long-term employment…they do it for creativity and love of music. The goal of a company is to make money and if laying off 60 people means they get to reduce the cost of doing business, than so be it. This shit happens all of the time. It sucks to be the laid off employees but life is tough sometimes. As for Iovine maybe banging Nicole S., don't just hate on her. It ain't like it would have been the first time for him. If you want to increase your chance of fidelity in a marriage, do NOT marry someone in the entertainment or pro sports business.

The talent gets into it for love of music. Sometimes. Manufactured groups groups from the Monkees to Pussycat Dolls are the other extreme. Cash, fame, and/or ass.

The business end of it is about the cash.

When you can make a great record using a $20,000 Pro Tools rig, why in the hell did they spend $6 million each on these records? Even with a hig profile producer, $1 million is ridiculous. If that left $5 million over for marketing, that is crazy too. Give them $10,000 a week in tour support and send them out in the clubs like everytone else. Note: Most artists would kill for $10k a week in support. Better than the $2000 most get, if any….

The reason why groups and bands are so successful is because the different personalities of the members attract different types of fans, so when you only have the front man or woman selling a record, it's a lot harder cuz your audience is not nearly as vast.

The reason they've spent so much is because it costs so much for the right producer (so important in mainstream RnB/HipHop), the videos, the promotion, the flights to UK/Europe, hotels, makeup, clothes etc.

The problem lies in the fact that they throw all this money at a sub-standard product. No matter how many countries Nicole Scherzinger flies to and how many expensive videos she makes etc, her music is still utter drivel and no one - in any territory - is buying it. Which is no bad thing. Maybe the US music industry will buck up it's ideas and stop churning out below-average crap with glossy videos.

Her performance on So You Think You Can Dance made it QUITE clear that her solo debut was BOUND to tank! Damn every 1/2 hour you can see her doing that CW ad! If in fact it was $18million on her it was wasted. Look at Beyonce' that is a PRIME example of what a entertainer is you have to be the entire package NOT just cute with a body! YOU HAVE TO HAVE TALENT. Sad day to see Geffen &Interscope merge.Lots of pink slips for Christmas!!:::pity pity:::

Perez, don't be stupid. Just because a few of the major record labels are failing does not mean "the music industry is dead." In practically the same breath, you posted a song collaboration by two artists. That is ALSO the music industry, and I'm sure their song on iTunes will benefit financially from your mention of it. The music industry is THRIVING. Digital music sales are up - WAY up - and the concert branch of the industry is thriving! Rethink your statement!

Maybe the music industry would get on a lot better if it didn't waste 18 million on making 3 CDs, LOL.

Re: M C – how would they even know when a fire alarm was going off? Since the music they are making is ridiculous beeping shit, not unlike fire alarms or trucks backing up.
They would hear the fire alarm and be like, hey is that a new track? I dig.
Lets get on with this thing

Silly commentary, Perez. If business needs warrant downsizing, it's sad, but downsizing must occur. The music business just isn't what it used to be. Did you reflect on the fact that Jimmy Iovine (along with Ted Field) built Interscope from nothing and while Jimmy Iovine has become insanely wealthy, Interscope has also gainfully employed many people for many years?

As for the $6M average cost per album, it's not far-fetched for big name artists. Between artists advances, big name producers (who can go for upwards of $250K a song, plus royalties), costs of marketing, etc. one can run through $6M rather quickly. The flipside is that if the record company gets a hit, $6 million dollars seems like nothing and the record company cashes big checks. The main problem for record companies is that big scores are growing fewer and farer between.

All I can say is, Interscope could've made more $ had they spent more time & effort promoting Robin Thicke, instead of these artists. There is a man with true talent. Can't wait for Interscope to finally release his next album, but who knows when that will be…

Britney Spears got $100 million dollars for having NO TALENT. She doesn't sing, can't write a song, doesn't play an instrument, can barely dance, and doesn't even look good anymore. I wish someone could explain to me why she gets so much for so little. Think about how many truly talented singers are out there that can't even get a record deal and this stupid slut gets $100 million. UNREAL.

Blame the talent-less trio listed above:

Will.I.Am is a bug-eyed, ugly, DUMB idiot. He's mean and he sucks.
Nicole Scherzinger is nothing but a dirty little slut. Nobody cares.
I had no problem with Eve until she collaborated with Sean Paul. You reap what you sow.
When record labels sign cruel shit-talkers, ugly c-sucking whores, and those who cannot determine good collaborations from embarassing ones, what do they honestly expect? The public isn't THAT discriminating, but please use some discretion.
Of course the music industry is dead. Ummm…American Idol?

Gosh, my friend works in the legal department of Interscope and he/she knew about the lay-offs since at least last month, but he/she didn't tell me about the Geffen merge. He/she did tell me that Jimmy's wife threw him out of the house after she found out about Nicole and right now he's staying in her apartment that he bought for her. Crazy times, hope my friend keeps his/her job!

I would have to agree with the Britney Spears comment. Performers get paid millions not to perform anything. They don’t write their own music, or play an instrument or even choreograph their own tired videos. Most performers today are being promoted because they are visually appealing or are mindless drones who will take it up the ass for the all might dollar. While my friends, who are actual musicians play in local venues performing their OWN music, continue to barley make it from year to year doing so. Because most of the music buying public just don’t want to actually try/work to find good music but will eat what ever steaming pile is handed to them by the music execs. Now the record industry is being told by quality artist like NIN (Trent Reznor), Radiohead, and Saul Williams that we don’t really need you to get our music out there anymore.

  92. PHOENIXAMAZON says – reply to this

    92

Real musicians are going back to the earlier roots and selling direct to the fan base. Musicians such as Trent Reznor who has a loyal fan base are refusing to prop up the flash in the pan performers and are jumping ship from their labels taking record sales with them, and the record industry is still yet to understand that they themselves have caused the problem, not the prated music downloader's. A vast majority of music fans realize that they have to buy the music to support he artists in a more obvious way. So yes, they will file share but they all go and buy they music that really counts in their book. If you look at the Interscope and Geffen web sites both are HEAVY with throw away music, music that won't count in 5 or 10 years. It is those artists who should fear pirated music downloading, Because if you heard/smelled the shit do you really want to buy the shit?
