Are ethnic kids 'not cute enough'?
It's been revealed that more kids were asked to fake it in the Beijing Opening Ceremony!
According to a new report, the children who marched out in full costume supposedly representing the country's 56 ethnic groups were in fact all from the same one, the majority Han Chinese race.
The official guide to the opening ceremony said that the children did not just represent but "came from" China's ethnic groups:
"Fifty-six children from 56 Chinese ethnic groups cluster around the Chinese national flag, representing the 56 ethnic groups."
When Wang Wei, executive vice-president of the Beijing organizing committee, was asked about the latest misinformation scandal at a press conference on Friday, he said:
"I think you are being very meticulous," he said. He said it was "traditional" to use dancers from other ethnic groups in this way.
"I would argue it is normal for dancers, performers, to be dressed in other races' clothes," he said. "I don't know exactly where these performers are from."
Are things getting lost in translation?!

I've actually done some research on Chinese minorities and this is fairly common for many Han (which comprimise like 85% of Chinese population) to dress up and perform dances of the various Minority people for shows, concerts, etc.
Most minority peoples in China are very impoverished, live pretty much very agriculturally, and are illiterate. The Chinese government actually provides many things for these people such as their own rights of governing their prefecture and many of China's government rules don't apply to minorities (one child policy, religion, etc)
I Loves ya Perez, but when it comes to China and its' attitudes on their minority peoples, they are actually much better than the US.

The opening games was entertainment and not the history channel where you're supposed to be 100% accurate, especially in a case where it doesn't hurt anybody. They only said they dressed like the different ethnic groups not that they were. Did you have a problem with zhang ziyi (Chinese) playing a Japanese geisha girl in Memoirs of a geisha. America obviously didn't as they gave her a golden globe nomination. Do you really think they get native americans to do all the historical films. Hells no they use hispanics. Get over it. Honestly, lighten up. In the opening ceremony it was said that the children "represented" each ethnic group in China, not necessarily that they were from each ethnic group. The opening ceremonies were simply amazing and the Americans are hardly the ones to point out ever "false" detail (i.e. Mariah Carey, our current favorite lip sync-er)

it was completely obvious to me that they were all Han Chinese dressed in ethnic costume. chinese from other ethnicities look very different - some almost russian, some tall, some dark, etc. i'm amazed this is a 'scandal' when it would have been obvious to observant viewer

Happy Friday Perez et all………….I don't care what they wore or where in China they were from or that the footsteps with the lights into the stadium were pre recorder…. It was still the best opening show I've ever seen. Awesome doesn't even begin to describe it. In all fairness though they did have a 300 million budget. I couldn't get enough of it. What does bother me and many others is that two of those Chinese little girls were not a day over 12, if even that, whom they claim have passports that "Prove" they're sixteen or will be in this calender yr… It appears that China will also provide fake passports. Remember they TAKE these kids from their Parents at 3 and put them far from home in boarding schools. So not right…. Gotta tell u I was shipped to a Marymount boarding school at 12 and I hated it, I was miserable…. Go USA… Congrats to the bronze for the USA gymnist, the Gold and Silver for the girls Gymnists last night and all the fabulous swimmers as well as all our great American athletes over there. Win or loose their all winners an heros for trying. Hardly surprising, the Chinese hate their ethnic minorities (Tibetans, case in point!). It is also common for soldiers to be disguised as monks as Buddhist temples tourists visit in China.

If they hated the ethnic minorities they wouldn't bother to show the cultures/costumes at all. If you put the Chinese minorities together you wouldn't be able to tell them apart. An attitude towards race is not defined as genocide, PLEASE go back on wikipedia and research genocide before you make statements like that.

The opening ceremony is a major theatrical performance, and in theatre, like in ACTING, not everyone truly is what they're portraying.
I'm more interested in the fact that i was EDUCATED about the people of China, and those little tidbits don't detract from that.

First of all, my little girl who is adopted from China is a minority. Most the minorities live in the rural areas of china and there is a great of predjudice against them. They all look vastly different from Han Chinese in my opinion. Most people wouldn't notice any difference unless you live there.
I thought the costumes were beautiful and the ceremonies were breathtaking.
Chinese culture is all about national pride and looking good to the world. They are not about to put anyone on national tv that doesn't portray them in a positive light!
Anyone with one eye could clearly see that they were all Chinese kids. I mean, especially when the camera was up close to them…their eyes are all shaped the same!
Well, maybe it's because I'm Asian I could tell, but seriously…we knew this was going to happen. We all know that China has some shit up it's sleeve…but really, who doesn't?
