GLAAD is glad for more LGBT on TV

GLAAD (The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) is glad to report an increase in LGBT characters on scripted network television this season, which marks an all-time high.

This year will see more than twice as many gay and lesbians as last year on TV, which actually saw a decline in LGBT characters.

This season, Fox gets the award for Most Improved, jumping from zero LGBT characters to 5, which is also the most of any network, so they also receive the Most Shocking and Impressive award. Worst Player goes to CBS, which has no LGBT characters this season, and Most Disappointing goes to the CW, who, despite their targeted demographic, can boast only one character.

But, overall, the news is good, with the number of recurring LGBT characters increasing from 13 to 19.

GLAAD’s roll call includes ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC which totals about 616 regular characters (Gay or straight). Of those 616, 16 are LGBT. The 616 characters are divided amont 88 scripted shows and among those 88 shows 12 have a little LGBT in them.

GLAAD president Neil Giuliano is pleased with the numbers, saying, “This dramatic increase shows how far many networks have come in developing complex, multilayered lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters.”
