There are plenty of opportunities between the time an awful joke pops into your head and when you send it, to, well, not send it. Like when you take out your phone, when you open twitter, when you word it all out, when you read it over and then hit send, for instance.

The Denver Broncos' Tony Carter had all those opportunities but decided to ignore them, when he tweeted:

Aurora Shooting: How You Can Help

We are just sick over what went down in Aurora, Colorado last night.

Our hearts are heavy along with the rest of the Nation's after hearing the news just this morning of a mass shooting in a movie theater at the midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises.

Police have confirmed 12 people are dead and another 60 or so are injured as a result of the shooting — but we don't have to just sit idly by and let other people handle this on their own.

There are things we can do to help.

Here's how to get involved:

1. Call the tip hotline: If you saw or heard anything that can help the police, call 303-739-1862. Police are also using this number to field inquiries about victims.

2. Contact the Red Cross: The local Red Cross office can be reached at 303-722-7474. Police are instructing members of the public interested in helping the community to call this number.

3. Stay informed: Follow the hashtag "#theatershooting" or check in with the Denver Post for the latest information.

4. Donate blood: Sadly, tragedies like this remind us that we should also focus on prepardness, like regular donations to blood banks. Contact the Bonfills Blood Center to learn more about how to donate. Officials have indicated that they are looking for type O negative blood.

5. Talk to someone: Contact a crisis counselor with the Aurora Mental Health Center by calling 303-617-2300, or visiting the Center's offices at 11059 East Bethany Drive in Aurora.

6. Build community: There are several gatherings, prayer vigils, and support groups being organized, like the Community Cares Meet-up at the Thrive Community Recreation Center (Sunday: 1-5 p.m.; 15528 East Hampden Circle, Aurora) or a prayer vigil with State Representative Rhonda Fields at the Aurora Municipal Center (Friday: 7 p.m.; 15151 East Alameda Parkway).

Reach out and do everything you can.

If you can't do much at all, then at least keep the victims and their families in your thoughts.

We're just glad they caught the sicko.
