"Bank Street (Developmental-Interaction Approach)
The Bank Street method is a child-centered approach that encourages children to be active learners primarily through play. The teacher’s role is largely to observe and respond to the activities that children independently initiate.
Reggio-Emilia
Reggio-Emilia curriculum is an integrated and comprehensive approach to learning that encourages children to inquire and investigate the world around them, plan, collaborate, learn, and then apply newly-acquired knowledge elsewhere. The curriculum also emphasizes the importance of family involvement and endeavors to maintain a strong sense of community.
Which method is best for my child?
Depending on factors such as a child’s learning style and personality, there may be one particular curriculum that would be more appropriate than others. For instance, Montessori and Bank Street curricula, with their less-structured classrooms and emphasis on independence, might be a good choice for children who can comfortably initiate their own activities, play independently, and do not seek or require high levels of monitoring from adults.
Alternatively, children who thrive in a more structured environment and require regular guidance from teachers may do well in a High/Scope program. Even within a common curriculum, there can be a great deal of variability; therefore, parents should always visit prospective classrooms to observe the curriculum for themselves."
