Scientists: We Created A Functioning Liver Out Of Stem Cells

Stem Cell Liver

Holy. Shizzballs.

If this is true, this is a HUGE step for stem cell research!

A group of Japanese scientists are claiming to have created a functioning human liver out of stem cells!

The team transplanted induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells into the body of a mouse, where it grew into a small, but working, human liver.

A TINY HUMAN LIVER INSIDE OF A MOUSE!

iPS cells have the potential to develop into any body tissue and can be taken from adults — so there's much less of a moral objection to this.

They're saying the breakthrough will lead to creating human organs we can use for transplants!

WOW!

Science! Science! Science!

Robin gibb cancer treatment continues

Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb is back in the hospital to continue chemotherapy treatment for his liver cancer.

He checked into the London Clinic last Wednesday and sources say doctors have been "astounded at his response to treatment."

That's such good news! He must not be in too bad of shape because not only was he recently quoted as saying he "feels fantastic," but he performed at a benefit concert on February 13th.

Let's hope his body continues to respond favorably to the chemo so he can beat this disease!

Good luck with the rest of your treatment, Robin!

4 Reasons Not To Binge Drink

4 Reasons Not To Binge Drink

Binge drinking is a celebrated epidemic. Movies glamorize it and college students pretty much demand it of their peers. One out of 3 adults and 2 out of 3 high school students who drink alcohol binge drink. And yet, there are numerous downsides to binge drinking, which is defined as having five or more drinks in a couple of hours for men and teens, and four or more for women, at least once in the previous 30 days.

Here are the top four reasons that you should avoid binge drinking:

Car Crashes: Binge drinkers are 14 times more likely than non–binge drinkers to drive while impaired, significantly increasing the chance of an accident.

Assault and Violence: Among college students— 80% of whom drink, including 51% who binge drink — an estimated 700,000 are attacked by another student in alcohol-related incidents, according to a study. Also, nearly 100,000 college women report being sexually assaulted in attacks that involve drinking, although experts suggest that number is far higher because many attacks go unreported.

Long-term illness and death: Over time, chronic binge drinking is also associated with a variety of long-term health problems. The problems include cirrhosis of the liver, high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, and cancer.. A study also found that 42% of alcohol-related deaths could be attributed to chronic illness.

Unplanned Pregnancies and STDs: Binge drinking can lead to risky sexual behavior, including engaging in unprotected sex and sex with multiple partners. This increases rates of unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. A study found that rates of gonorrhea were nearly five times higher in female binge drinkers than in women who abstained from alcohol.

Drinking can be fun, but please don’t have toooo much fun! Seriously, one night of craziness won’t justify a lifetime of regret!

Michael Caine Asked Doctor To Help His Terminally Ill Father Die

Michael Caine Asked Doctor To Help His Terminally Ill Father Die

When Sir Michael Caine’s father was suffering in the hospital from liver cancer, Caine made an extremely difficult decision and asked the doctor to end his father’s suffering by giving him an overdose.

Said Michael in a radio interview:

‘My father had cancer of the liver and I was in such anguish over the pain he was in, that I said to this doctor, I said: "Isn’t there anything else you could [do], just give him an overdose and end this” , because I wanted him to go and he said: "Oh no, no, no, we couldn’t do that. Then, as I was leaving, he said: "Come back at midnight." I came back at midnight and my father died at five past twelve. So he’d done it…’

Michael never revealed this to his mother.

When asked if he supported voluntary euthanasia, Michael said yes.

‘Oh I think so, yeah. I think if you’re in a state to where life is no longer bearable, if you want to go. I’m not saying that anyone else should make the decision, but I made the request, but my father was semi-conscious.’

There’s no easy answer to whether or not voluntary euthanasia is right or wrong. What do U think?
