On Thursday, a truck deliberately drove into a crowd that had gathered in the French Riviera town to celebrate Bastille Day, killing 84 people and injuring many others.

The personal stories are what make this all the more heartbreaking.

On Thursday night in Nice, France, a truck driver went on a mile-long rampage, killing at least 84 people and injuring hundreds more — including dozens that are still fighting for their lives — as the country celebrated Bastille Day.

And even though we were already aware that two Americans had been killed in the tragedy, it's even more gut-wrenching now to learn more about the lives lost — in this case, a father and son taken far too soon.

Sean Copeland, 51, and his 11-year-old son, Brodie, were killed in the attack as they were enjoying the Bastille Day festivities in the middle of a family vacation to the south of France.

The father and son, from a small town in Texas, were watching fireworks and enjoying their time together with the rest of the family when tragedy struck, according to family friend Bill Bishop.

Bishop spoke to People about the Copelands, a family that will be remembered for far more than just those final moments (below):

We are continuing to learn more about the terror attack in Nice, France on Thursday night, and it continues to get more and more tragic.

According to media reports and the words of French president Francois Hollande, the death toll has risen to 84 people — all killed when a truck driver mowed down a large crowd during Bastille Day celebrations in the southern city.

We also have learned the identity of the man behind the carnage; officials say he is Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, and it is now confirmed that police did kill him Thursday night to stop the attack.

He was a French citizen of Tunisian descent, and even though he had been known to police in connection with minor crimes and petty theft, nothing he had done had gotten him on France's terror watch list.

On Thursday, a truck plowed into a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France, killing at least 77. As the terrible tragedy was unfolding, Rihanna was actually in the French Riviera city, where she was scheduled to perform on Friday night.

Fortunately, the singer's rep has confirmed to Billboard that "she's safe."

Following the deadly attack that France President Francois Hollande describes as having "terrorist character," the artist's Anti World Tour show at Allianz Stadium has been cancelled.

A Nice official took to Twitter to explain that RiRi's concert — as well as other events in the city — have been called off in the wake of the devastating assault.

We're so relieved that Rihanna's safe, and our hearts are with everyone affected by this senseless act of violence.

Donald Trump is pushing back his big announcement following the devastating attack in France.

The presumptive Republican nominee was going to announce his Vice President pick on Friday, but has decided to postpone the conference after a truck deliberately plowed into a crowd in Nice, France, killing at least 73 people and injuring 100 others.

The large group had gathered in the street to celebrate Bastille Day when the vehicle drove into them, in what regional police are calling a terror attack.
