Health Journal Says Romance Novels Encourage Unsafe Sex

Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & TrueSex

Romance novel pic

We love posting new health studies, but this one is REALLY reaching.

An essay published in the latest edition of the UK Journal of Family Planning & Reproductive Health is charging that romance novels are responsible for encouraging unsafe sex practices!

Comparing sex between characters in trashy romance novels and actual people, a relationship psychologist wrote in the essay:

"To be blunt, we like condoms — for protection and for contraception — and they don't. In one recent survey, only 11.5% of romantic novels studied mentioned condom use, and within these scenarios the heroine typically rejected the idea because she wanted 'no barrier' between her and the hero."

The author continues to point out that the literary genre could instead be spreading positive safe-sex messages, writing:

"In some Western countries, romance accounts for nearly half of all fiction bought; some fans read up to 30 titles a month, one book every two days. So while women's exposure to formal sex and relationships education (SRE) may be as little as a few hours in a lifetime, exposure to the brand of SRE offered in romantic novels may be as much as a day every week."

Uh-oh! We don't remember any prose in Breaking Dawn describing the Trojan that Edward slipped on before he consummated his eternal love with Bella! LOLz!

Does this mean an entire generation of Twi-Hards are going to give up on condoms? Ummm, we doubt it!

In fact, NPR has already pointed out several flaws in this psychologist's argument. The information is based off of only 78 books, all of which were were published between 1981 and 1996 before a widespread understanding of STDs hit the general public.

Sounds like the author of this essay shot off an argument a little prematurely, don't ya think? Ha!

Regardless, we believe it's up to the parents and schools to educate children about safe sex, not authors trying to make a buck off of their readers.

We'd say this argument is about as valid as saying all these vampire hotties frolicking around pop culture are encouraging people to develop a fetish for necrophilia.

Sam Lufti Wants Brit Brit To Testify In His Defamation Lawsuit!

sam-lufti-wants-britney-spears-to-testify-in-his-defamation-lawsuit

This guy is a real piece of work. Hasn't he put this poor girl through enough?

Sam Lufti, who manipulated his way into the role of Britney Spears' manager while she was going through her issues and basically took advantage of her mental condition, has been pursuing a defamation lawsuit against her mother, Lynne Spears, for publishing just that in her memoir, Through The Storm.

Apparently, he's now trying to get the pop star on the stand to give a deposition, but her team has resisted, claiming she is mentally incapable of doing so. Therefore, on Monday, he asked a judge to have a pyschiatric evaluation of her to that the claims are not true, due to her recent lucid interviews and upcoming tour.

According to a declaration to the court by UCLA Assistant Professor of Psychiatry Joshua Retsky, who analyzed the singer's recent behavior on behalf of Lufti:

"In the Ryan Seacrest interview, which was recorded approximately two months ago, Britney Spears is interviewed at length, and she responds logically and coherently to questions, evidencing logical thinking and mental competency. The edited interviews in the [MTV] video documentary also evidence coherent and logical thinking, responsiveness to questions, and mental competence … In my opinion, there is good cause to conduct an Independent Medical Examination to investigate the Conservators' claim that Ms. Spears is not mentally capable of testifying, and the claim that she was not mentally competent to enter into a binding contract. …"

Yes, this all may be true, but that doesn't mean she should have to be thrown into a room with that man again!

It's clear that our Brit Brit has come a long way, and has made an amazing recovery from her issues thus far, but we imagine she's still got a long way to go - and there's no need to have to endure the added stress of a man who enabled her when she was at her absolute worst!

Can't he just leave her alone?! Ugh.

Absolutely deplorable!

What do U think?? Should Brit Brit be forced to testify?

Dr. Drew Defends Diagnosing Celebs

Dr. Drew Defends Diagnosing Celebs

Dr. Drew has built a reputation of diagnosing mental conditions in celebs that he has never even met, and he’s taken a lot of criticism for it.

He finally spoke out to defend himself:

"It's bizarre to me that you can have political commentators, sports commentators, weather commentators, but with medicine, people go, 'You can't do that.' It's like, if you show me a picture of a rash, I don't have to know the person to tell you what that rash is. There are lots of medical conditions that you can diagnose never having met the person. Soon enough, we'll have telemedicine and do it through the Internet — that's the future.”

He continued:

“You can educate people about politics, criminality, the law, but not about medicine? It's just silly … I really don't want to hurt anybody, but to say the truth and to offer words that might be helpful in understanding what some of these conditions are. I can't see any reason not to do that. That's changing things for the better."

He does have some pretty good points.

The problem with him publicly diagnosing celebs is that if you don’t know someone and haven’t spoken to them, there’s no way for you to have any sort of nuanced diagnosis of them. Sure, you can look at a rash and call it a rash, but what about deep-set psychological conditions?

Those are more complicated than red bumps on your skin.

We’re not saying he absolutely shouldn’t publicly diagnose celebs, he should just remember that they are COMPLEX PEOPLE, and assuming that you can break down their psyche without ever having spoken to them seems naive!

Just sayin’.
