How We Furnish Our Homes Affects Tigers Homes

Siberian Tiger bed

The Siberian tiger is such a magnificent and majestic creature, but it is going extinct due to deforestation in its natural habitat. In fact, there are only 400 left in the wild!

What can WE do about it?

As a consumer we have a choice in what products we purchase and Vermont Wood Studios is raising awareness for consumers to avoid purchasing wooden furniture products from outside the United States.

They say up to 90% of the furniture you see for sale in our country is made of illegally harvested wood that is clear cut from ecologically sensitive habitats like this tiger's habitat.

Luckily, there is no need to buy outside of the U.S. because in Vermont our forests are growing at a rate that is faster than the harvest rate, increasing the forests sustainability!

Vermont Wood Studios offers styles ranging from contemporary to hand-crafted, all made with American wood.

They even offer free delivery, plant 5 trees for EVERY sale, and together with Save Tigers Now (a global campaign started by Leonardo DiCaprio) are working to double the number of wild tigers by 2022, the next Year of the Tiger.

We know where we're going furniture shopping!

Misguided Eco-Labels Hurt Sustainable Fishing

fish-market-not-eco-friends.jpg

If you're buying fish at the seafood counter and don't have your sustainable seafood, don't depend on the grocery store to let you know what is environmentally-friendly.

“People often think that if they buy seafood with an eco-label, it’s automatically a good choice,” said Wenonah Hauter, executive director of Food & Water Watch.

Labels that say "sustainably harvested" or "environmentally produced" may seem like a better option, but it's misleading. There is no regulated definition for sustainablility.

“Consumers aren’t told that these labels often have a ‘pay to play’ aspect,” added Marianne Cufone, director of Food & Water Watch’s fish program. "We need government standards. And they need to be rigorous so consumers can make truly informed decisions about what seafood to buy.”

It seems to be a completely reasonable request.

Pennsylvania May Use Coyotes To Control Deer

Coyote vs. Deer for environmental purpises

This is an intriguing concept.

An animal-rights group that opposes the use of hunters to cut the deer population in Valley Forge National Historical Park wants officials to consider using coyotes instead.

The group wants Pennsylvania to not rely on guns in the upcoming season, but rather nature to restore balance to the deer population.

Park officials tell The Philadelphia Inquirer the proposal wouldn't work. They say the number of deer has to be cut from an estimated 1,277 to about 175 in the next four years.

Thats a whole lot of dear to get rid of!

Coyotes certainly wouldn't bring the population of deer down to 15, but it'd help cleanse and balance the environment.

We're curious to see if this works. It's the sustainable way of controlling a population . We're always down for sustainability!!!

WWF Suggests Finding A New Earth By 2030

WWF warns us to find another planet

Well, damn! Call this majorly depressing!

According to the WWF (no not the wrestling brand, but the World Wildlife Federation), if we continue the trend of carbon pollution and over-using the Earth's natural resources, we will need a second planet to meet our needs by 2030.

Say what!? I'm not ready to move to Mars!

In 2007, Earth's 6.8 billion humans were living 50 percent beyond the planet's threshold of sustainability - and it's only gotten worse!

Shiz…

In a report by the UN biodiversity conference, it warns that Even with modest UN projections for population growth, consumption and climate change, by 2030 humanity will need the capacity of two Earths to absorb CO2 waste and keep up with natural resource consumption.

You think this is depressing!? It gets even worse!

If everyone used resources at the same rate per capita as the United States or the United Arab Emirates, four and a half planets would be needed, it said, highlighting the gap in "ecological footprint" between rich and poor.

We're not exactly setting the standard to green living - even though it seems like we would be!

Biologists say many species, especially mammals, birds and amphibians, are in headlong decline, their numbers ravaged by habitat loss, hunting or the likely impact of climate change - with biodiversity dropping 30% in the last 30 years!

If this isn't a slap to the face of the world, we don't know what is!

We HAVE to change this! Otherwise, we're out of the only planet we've got!

Reduce, re-use, and recycle! It's only three simple R's. We've got to save out planet! We have to stop destroying it and start reversing what we've done to it!
