Clean Your Pooch's Toys Safely With These Tips!

Have you ever wondered what's the safest way to clean your dog's toys?!?

Well, if you have, then you're in luck because we have some good tips:

According to the ASPCA, using watered-down bleach to clean your furry friend's toys is completely ok… just as long as you rinse them out thoroughly and let 'em dry completely before your pooch begins to play.

But if you're afraid to use bleach, you can also dip the toys in an even mixture of water and vinegar for 30 minutes and then scrub 'em down.

Another good way to clean your doggie's fav toys is by simply using a mild dish soap, which will definitely NOT cause any harm to your beloved pet.

Now that you know how to scrub off all the unwanted dirt, you can start polishing away in the safest way possible!!

Happy cleaning!!

Q&A: Dog Destroys Chew Toys

All dogs love toys!

But what happens when your dog is a very good chewer and is constantly going through toys.

TeddyHilton.com reader, Tori, asked Dr. Patrick Mahaney:

I recently adopted a pit mix from the humane society and she destroys her toys. I was wondering if there was a brand of dog toys that would be good for an above average chewer?

-Tori

Dr. Patrick responded:

Hello Tori,

Thank you for your question. Like you, many dog owners seek the best option for a chew toy to pacify their eager pooch.

If you are looking for a toy that is not ingested but provides hours of virtually indestructible entertainment, I'd consider a Kong .

The Kong is like a hollow, rubber bell. It can be entertaining as is or filled with delicious substances to provide hours of amusement.

For my clients, I recommend filling a Kong with healthy, whole food based treats (lacking meat and protein "meal", by-products, artificial colors/flavors/etc), then capping the open end with natural peanut butter. This canine cocktail is the put into the freezer, then offered at a time when your absence must be pacified by an amusing and interest-keeping object.

Alternatively, you can use a twisted rope toy that is size appropriate for your pit mix. The rope can even have a "flossing" effect to remove debris from in between teeth. Just make sure to trim off any loose ends that could be ingested or remove the toy if she seems to be overly successful at destroying it.

Good luck with these (and other) toy choices.

Q&A: Dog Looooves To Chew

dr-patrick-mahaney-blackpic.jpg

Lots of people have dogs who loooove to chew. So did this reader:

Dear Teddy,

I'm the owner of a Golden Retriever and I'm looking for a good a long, lasting chew toy for my pal. He's a rather energtic and active pup, and he puts his toys through the ringer with all his energy. Any suggestions?

-Andy

Dr. Patrick Mahaney responded:

Hello Andy,

Thank you for your question.

You are fortunate to have such a pleasant breed like the Golden Retriever.

They are true companion dogs that I greatly enjoy having as veterinary patients.

Finding that right chew toy that survives the playful advances of a determined dog can certainly be challenging. I am pleased to hear that you are overseeing playtime to make sure that nothing inappropriate is ingested.

The toys that I know that seem to be the least likely to be destroyed include "twisted rope" toys and the Kong. A twisted rope toy can provide a flossing-like effect to stimulate gum tissue and remove debris. The Kong can be stuffed with healthy, all natural, preservative/artificial color/artificial flavor free treats, have the hole topped off with a natural peanut butter "cap", then put into the freeze to solidify the peanut butter.

This provides a healthy and entertaining play experience that most dogs cannot resist.

Good luck.
