Stars To Watch 2019

Who’s going to be the next big thing?
It’s impossible to tell for sure who will become a big star, but there are some signs to look for.
Did they steal scenes in a small TV role? Did they come out of nowhere to being one of your favorite musicians? Are they starring as the lead in a $100 million blockbuster next year??
Find out who WE think has a good shot at going nowhere but up next year (below)!

1. Sunny Suljic

Sunny Suljic Stars to Watch 2019
A lot of young actors explode after turning in a star-making performance. But two in one year??
That was the feat this 13-year-old pulled off in 2018. First he made millions of gamers cry as a grieving son looking to prove himself to his father in megahit Game of the Year winner God Of War.
Then he scored the lead in Jonah Hill‘s directorial debut, mid90s, playing a kid trying to survive lessons in skateboarding and life from an older crowd.
Nothing in the can for 2019 yet, but it’s only a matter of time. Expect Sunny to have a bright future on the big screen.

2. Awkwafina

Awkwafina Stars To Watch 2019
First she stole (ahem) scenes from Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock in the underperforming Ocean’s 8. THEN the viral hit rapper slayed in the HUGE hit Crazy Rich Asians!
Gurl even got a surprise invitation to host SNL!
Now Awkwa (real name Nora Lum btw) already has three flicks ready for release in 2019.

3. Cynthia Erivo

Cynthia Erivo
You may not have even heard of this British powerhouse yet, but you will soon!
She was a standout in the star-studded ensemble casts of two highly rated but relatively underseen films in 2018 — as a desperate lounge singer in Bad Times at the El Royale and a desperate babysitter in Widows.
Now she’s ready to take center stage; in 2019, she’ll play the titular historic heroine Harriet Tubman in Harriet.

4. Tessa Violet

Head bopping hooky pop with clever, relatable lyrics? Thank you, more please!
The YouTube star exploded with the music video for Crush (above) and decided to release her debut album Bad Ideas in an unconventional way, piece by piece over the next year and a half.
If future tracks continue to build on the audience her nerdy appeal has already gained, expect her to cross over in a big way!

5. Brian Tyree Henry

Brian Tyree Henry
After two solid seasons of FX‘s Atlanta, the Paper Boi actor was on everyone’s hot list.
That heat lead to a packed 2018 — Hotel ArtemisWhite Boy RickWidowsIf Beale Street Could TalkSpider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse — in which he was consistently praised as one of the best things about every project.
2019 is shaping up to be even bigger, so if you’re not already a fan, you’re about to be!

6. Victoria Pedretti

Victoria Pedretti stars to watch
The newcomer broke millions of hearts in her FIRST TV ROLE EVER as the cursed kid sister Nell in Netflix’s hit horror series The Haunting Of Hill House.
Up next? Her first feature film role ever — in a little movie called Once Upon A Time In HollywoodQuentin Tarantino‘s take on the Manson Family murders.
The 23-year-old is playing real life convicted killer Leslie Louise “Lulu” Van Houten, which should be a huge change from her last role — and get her on even more radars!

7. Duckie Thot

Duckie Thot stars to watch
She may have only finished third on Australia’s Next Top Model, but her star is rising faster than everyone at the moment.
Duckie (whose full first name is Nyadak) has said she found it difficult to get work in Melbourne due to the color of her skin; that all changed when she moved to Brooklyn.
Not only has she already been on the cover of magazines like Paper and featured in ads for FentyMoschino, and Oscar de la Renta — she also made her Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show debut this year!
Who knows how high she’ll climb next year?

8. Hannah Gadsby

Hannah Gadsby Stars To Watch 2019
The Aussie standup became an overnight sensation (after years of work, naturally) when her Netflix special Nanette became an unexpected hit.
Hannah has admitted her phone is ringing off the hook with offers after the critically acclaimed hour — but says she’s going to take things slowly.
We’ll see about that!

9. Jay Ryan

Jay Ryan Stars To Watch 2019
You may remember Jay Ryan as the sexy Dr. Vincent Keller from The CW‘s Beauty and the Beast. (If you’re from Down Under, you may already know him from Neighbours!)
But if not, prepare to meet the New Zealand native as the second coming of romantic Backstreet Boys lover Ben Hanscom in It: Chapter Two.
If the movie follows the book, the hunky Ben will play a big part opposite Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy. And considering how much of an unexpected hit the first chapter was, this could be a huge leap for the Kiwi!

10. Indya Moore

Indya Moore Stars To Watch 2019
Even in the acclaimed cast of FX’s Pose, Angel was a standout!
She just brought so much humanity and soul to the role — and no wonder given her own backstory of being put into foster care after coming out to her parents as trans.
With her outspoken social media personality — in which she regularly fights against racism, sexism, transphobia, and other bullying — she’s sure to bring her own fan base with her to her next project!

11. Thomasin McKenzie

Thomasin McKenzie
The last actress to have an acclaimed coming out party in a gritty Debra Granik film was none other than Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone — for which she scored her first Oscar nomination!
We don’t hear any Oscar buzz so far for Thomasin, but the acclaim she’s getting for Leave No Trace has already gotten her a myriad of varied projects for 2019.
Get ready to see her costar this year with Timothee Chalamet in The KingScarlett Johansson in Jojo Rabbit, and Amy Ryan in Lost Girls — so far anyway.

12. Mena Massoud

Mena Massoud Aladdin
Born in Egypt, raised in Canada, and now on his way to Agrabah, the handsome Jack Ryan actor is about to break out in a big way in 2019.
Why? Oh, he’s the title character in a little film called Aladdin!
Something tells us being a Disney Prince is going to put his headshot on a lot more casting directors’ walls — and his poster on a lot of bedroom walls!
Um, if that sexy Jafar doesn’t steal his thunder…

13. McKenna Grace

McKenna Grace Stars To Watch 2019
Recurring roles on Young Sheldon and Fuller House. Young Tonya Harding. Young Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Young Theo in The Haunting of Hill House.
McKenna is quickly becoming THE go-to young actress in Hollywood.
And 2019 will see a continuation of that streak as she stars opposite Oscar winners Viola Davis and Allison Janney in dramedy Troop Zero AND plays Young Carol Danvers in one of the biggest movies of the year, Captain Marvel.

14. Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev Stars To Watch 2019
We haven’t had a NEW male tennis star in quite some time, but this German cutie is poised to take up the mantle.
At 21, the youngest top ten player (seen above with what we hope is a tennis trophy and not an unfortunate German sex toy with no translation in English) was consistently in the final five throughout 2018 and may hit #1 next year.
His secret weapon? He now has living legend Ivan Lendl as his coach. Get ready for some big upsets in the future!
Not only that, he’s becoming increasingly known for his brutal honesty off the court. Mmm… bad boys…

15. Justice Smith

Justice Smith stars to watch 2019
Justice in 2019! No, this isn’t a political statement, we’re just betting on this young star.
After a big part in Netflix’s The Get-Down and supporting roles in movies like Paper Towns and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, he’s finally the lead — well, the lead human.
He’s starring opposite Ryan Reynolds in the extremely cute-looking Detective Pikachu movie.

16. Nicole Byer

Nicole Byer Stars To Watch 2019
After getting on radars with her work on Ladylike and Girl Talk, the comic broke into all our homes and hearts as the host of Netflix‘s baking fail show, Nailed It.
If you think that’s a must watch, you need to be on her Instagram, in which she is just as full of elan!
She’s funny, she’s honest, she’s relatable — some network needs to give her a sitcom already! And with the kind of exposure she’s getting now, it can’t be long before an even bigger opportunity knocks!

17. Bronte Carmichael

Bronte Carmichael Stars To Watch 2019
After being the cutest thing in Christopher Robin, a film filled with adorableness, this kiddo scored roles in TWO George R.R. Martin projects back-to-back.
First on the sci-fi horror show Nightflyers, and up next? The season 8 of Game Of Thrones.
As little as we know about the secretive final season, one of the only NEW characters was described in casting announcements as a pretty awesome-sounding little girl. Per fansite Watchers On The Wall

“The role is described as being a straight-talking Northern-accented girl, someone remarkable for her dauntlessness and integrity. According to the write-up, she’s been brought up in a family of soldiers and shares their fearlessness. The part is said to be a ‘very nice stand-out part for a strong-minded young girl with a fighting spirit.'”

Wow! Remind you of anyone? Like, say, little Lyanna Mormont, the breakout newcomer of season 6?
We wonder if she might not be playing her namesake, Lyanna Stark, in some time-traveling Bran flashbacks… After all, it’s really HER story that set in motion almost everything we’ve seen so far.
In any case, the entire world will see it!

18. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Stars To Watch
As pirate Black Manta, the actor commandeered DC’s December hit Aquaman for several scenes.
In 2019, he’s got a big year planned, starring in HBO’s ambitious Watchmen TV series AND in UsJordan Peele‘s horror follow-up to Get Out. And TWO MORE features already in production!

19. Mischa Barton

Mischa Barton Stars To Watch 2019
We usually don’t put stars you already know on our list, but this is an unusual case.
Mischa came to prominence as a child actor and launched to superstardom as the star of The OC. Then things went… so wrong.
But now she’s turning her non-stop IRL drama from a problem into the solution as a reality TV star! When the reboot of The Hills finally airs, we’re predicting she’ll be the standout, most must-watch “character.” It’s the role she was born to play!
