Four young lives were taken after a fire erupted in their home — all while their mother was out shopping.
In 2021, 4-year-old twins Bryson and Kyson Hoath, as well as their younger set of twin brothers Logan and Leyton Hoath, 3, were left unsupervised in their Sutton-area home in London. And while their mother Deveca Rose was away, per the BBC, a house fire erupted from either an improperly discarded cigarette or a tea light, and it quickly consumed the entire downstairs. According to the Old Bailey, the terrified youngsters attempted to escape, but the house was locked — so they ran upstairs to escape the furious flames.

The outlet reported that while Deveca was away at the grocery store, neighbors realized the house was on fire and could hear the panicking brothers from inside. According to prosecutor Kate Lumsdon KC, neighbors kicked down the door but the flames were too intense to enter. When firefighters eventually arrived, they found the four boys unconscious under a bed upstairs. They were rushed to the hospital, but tragically all died of smoke inhalation.
So, SO very sad.
And heartbreakingly, the boys weren’t the only discovery made in the home. According to Kate, “Firemen noted that there was rubbish all over the floor and human excrement. There was a mattress and a door on the stairs.” She further claimed the “toilet and the bath were full of rubbish and not in use. Buckets and pots were used instead.”
WTF! These were the kind of living conditions the boys were being subjected to?? How awful. Kate revealed in court that it was because of the amount of trash that the fire was able to grow so quickly. So sad. And so preventable.
When Deveca returned from the store, she apparently told firefighters she had left her sons in the care of someone named Jade. However, prosecutors have since found that there was no sign of another person on the property:
“Jade did not exist, or, if she existed at all, she did not play the role ascribed to her by Ms Rose that night.”
In an ongoing court battle, Deveca has been fighting charges for years — four counts of manslaughter.
Authorities argue she was not just negligent this one time, but that it was a pattern of bad parenting. It has since been revealed that the boys had not attended school for three weeks prior to their deaths.
What a complete and total tragedy. What are your thoughts, Perezcious readers? Let us know in the comments down below.
