Tragedy has absolutely rocked the law enforcement community in a county in Texas.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Community Engagement Division has announced a shocking string of deaths by suicide of deputies both past and present — all within a six-week span. Deputy Long Nguyen was the first six weeks ago, followed by Deputy Christina Kohler earlier this month. Kohler was first reported missing, but was later found dead on March 13. Shockingly, just days later, another former deputy named Maria Vasquez was also found dead, followed shortly by the death of ANOTHER former deputy, William Bozeman.
Again, all deaths by suicide, according to the county medical examiner.

In a statement, Jose Lopez, the president of the Harris County Deputies’ Organization FOP #39 said:
“It caught a lot of us by surprise. One is too many. Two? Three? Yes, it’s definitely devastating.”
Devastating for sure… but also unbelievable, right? He added:
“It hits very close to home and it’s a reminder to us how fragile life is and it’s also a reminder we do need to look out for each other. We do need to take care of each other.”
Dr. Thomas McNeese, the director of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Behavioral Health Division, highlighted the growing concern surrounding mental health in law enforcement roles:
“These last few weeks have been difficult for our staff and the sheriff’s office as a whole. This profession, unfortunately, takes a toll on people. And, over time, the longer you’re in it, the more of a toll it takes, and it changes people.”

Our hearts are with the community and the affected families. But we also hope a deeper, independent investigation is launched. Four deaths is just… that’s too much.
