We’ve been seeing a lot of folks coming out of the woodwork to bash Blake Lively lately. Since the It Ends With Us drama and ensuing legal battle with Justin Baldoni, people who worked with Blake on past films, interviewed her, or even went to high school with her have been popping up with their own claims of how difficult she is.
We haven’t heard many such tales of Ryan Reynolds. But one former co-star has memories of the Deadpool star’s clumsy early steps as a movie star.
Matthew Lawrence dished the dirt on the latest episode of his Brotherly Love podcast with bros Andy and Joey Lawrence. While discussing the Blake and Justin feud, the Boy Meets World alum reminded his bros he’d once done a movie with Ryan! And he remembered the fledgling actor being hard to work with!

The middle bro starred in one of Ryan’s earliest movies, a 1998 teen horror flick called Boltneck. Matthew played a budding scientist who brought Ryan back to life like a teen Frankenstein. And he says even being so new to the industry, Ryan was already butting heads with producers and the director:
“He’d walk out.”
Whoa, really?? Matthew recalls young Ryan “just kind of wanted to do his thing and the producers would get really upset”:
“They even told him, ‘Ryan, this is a bad Jim Carrey impersonation. This is not what we hired you to do. You can’t impersonate somebody, you gotta do your own thing.'”
Whoa! Damn! He’s really gonna air out the humiliating notes a 21-year-old Ryan was getting on set? That’s harsh, bro!
But the intention of telling all this, obviously, was to paint a parallel with his controversial wife. Matthew recalls Ryan would “get upset” with the criticism and tell them:
“I’m doing my thing.”
We doubt his “thing” was ripping off Jim Carrey. Ryan’s own unique schtick has been pretty consistent for a long time. Right around that time you could see him on the sitcom Two Guys, A Girl, and a Pizza Place, and it was already pretty Ryan Reynolds-y. He brought that same quippy energy to National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, Blade: Trinity, and Waiting soon after, roles that really started to turn him into a star. But for this one, Matthew recalls, producers wanted a more serious tone. In a movie where a character was named Frank Stein. So when Matthew says Ryan was “trying to Deadpool” the script, well… frankly, we get it.
But it caused a lot of friction on set as “there was this major pull between one of the lead actors.” Matthew says he knew of a tense meeting between the future Marvel star and the director. The producers were especially impatient with Ryan’s antics:
“This crew, I think, had just been nominated for an Oscar, so they were kind of a big deal at that moment. Talk about frustrations on set with actors.”
Paul Colichman and Mark R. Harris had produced Gods and Monsters with Brendan Fraser, which was nominated for Best Screenplay. And they weren’t happy:
“They blamed that movie not working on him because they said there was this whole conflict.”
Matthew says their attitude at the time was, “We had so much hope for this guy. He’s going nowhere” — something he says is hilarious considering he’s one of the biggest stars in Hollywood now. He concluded by saying he didn’t have some horrible opinion of current-day Ryan because of it all:
“That is what my experience with Ryan Reynolds was… He obviously matured as a human being.”
