Senator Lindsey Graham has passed away.

Late on Saturday evening, the office for the South Carolina Senator revealed he died at 71 of a “brief and sudden illness” in a statement shared on X (Twitter):

“On this evening of Saturday, July 11, US Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness. Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period.”

As of now, it’s unclear what illness the Republican Senator was battling, but multiple news outlets have reported emergency services responded to a call for a “cardiac arrest” at 8:30 p.m.

In the wake of the news, Donald Trump revealed on a call with CNN that he spoke with Senator Graham, who was a close ally, at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday night — just two hours before EMS responded:

“It’s devastating, I thought he was fine. He called me last night … It had to be something very quick because he was fine when I spoke to him. Other than being tired, he was fine.”
