A long standing pillar of the Benedictine University community in Springfield, IL finds herself without her job now, after she placed an announcement in the local marriage about her marriage to her partner.
Seems that the university didn’t seem to care that Laine Tadlock was gay, so long as there was no proof of it. Laine said that the Catholic-sponsored university knew all alon she was a lesbian from the day she started working there. She admits that they also knew she’d taken her spouse, Kae Helstrom, to Iowa recently, so that they could be officially marry.
All of this they could handle, but what they couldn’t stand for was the couple’s wedding announcement in the local paper. The blurb included Laine’s position as the director of the education program at Benedictine and that, apparently, was taking things too far.
In a letter sent off to Laine├óΓé¼Γäós attorney, Benedictine President William Carroll wrote, ├óΓé¼┼ô├óΓé¼┬ª By publicizing the marriage ceremony in which she participated in Iowa she has significantly disregarded and flouted core religious beliefs which, as a Catholic institution, it is our mission to uphold.”
Hmm. Guess fairness and understanding to others isn’t found anywhere in the good book, huh?
Laine’s attorney reveals that the University offered her a substantial retirement package that included a contract to keep her mouth shut about why she was canned. She declined the offer.
Poor thing! Ignorance is such a horrible thing! Shame on them!
