After his upcoming thriller Contagion and a couple of other projects, director Steven Soderbergh plans to retire.
Here’s what Matt Damon had to say about his frequent collaborator’s decision to leave the filmmaking game:
“He’s retiring, he’s been talking about it for years and it’s getting closer.
He wants to paint and he says he├óΓé¼Γäós still young enough to have another career. He├óΓé¼Γäós kind of exhausted with everything that interested him in terms of form. He├óΓé¼Γäós not interested in telling stories. Cinema interested him in terms of form and that├óΓé¼Γäós it. He says, ‘If I see another over-the-shoulder shot, I├óΓé¼Γäóm going to blow my brains out.’
After this movie we├óΓé¼Γäóre doing Liberace next summer with Michael Douglas, and then he might do one more movie after that with George [Clooney], and then after that he├óΓé¼Γäós retiring.”
An unexpected career move, but it’s def important to follow your passion.
And who knows? Maybe after five or ten years of painting, Steven will return to us to make another mainstream film with Sasha Grey.
