We had no idea Aretha Franklin meant that much to her!
We were sort of bummed to hear that Fantasia wasn’t going to be attending the Grammys this year, even more so after she won her first accolade for Best Female Vocal Performance. We knew she had to have had her reasons and now we know exactly what those were.
Turns out, Fanny felt a bit slighted that she wasn’t invited to be part of the Aretha tribute that kicked off the show. On Monday, she phoned into BET’s 106 & Park to explain her stance. She said:

“I’m going to be very honest with you. You know I wasn’t at the Grammys last night. I’m kind of going through my own little thing. … Last night they were honoring someone who is my idol, Aretha Franklin, and there is no way I could have sat there and not got the happy feet and wanting to jump on the mic because she is my favorite so I felt like, you know, at the end of the day I should have been on that stage so, I kind of did my own little thing last night.”

Aw, honey! That shouldn’t have kept you away! You could have still honored Miz Aretha by thanking her during your acceptance speech or something. You only win your first Grammy once and you missed out on your chance to really feel that moment. We guess you had to do what was best for you, but that wouldn’t have been our choice.
Still, we’re glad you are taking some time for yourself, too. That’s equally as important.
