Writer-director Judd Apatow is not cutting a scene from his movie This Is 40, despite the bad timing of a “child murder” joke.
In the scene, Albert Brooks lines his children up to willingly be sprayed with a garden hose, joking that they’re all dead now and how much money they’ll save.
It doesn’t sound funny on paper, but Albert Brooks does know how to deliver sarcasm. But would anyone make the joke today?
Judd says of course he wouldn’t, but that the script was written over two years ago, long before the Sandy Hook tragedy. He says:
“In light of recent events, I understand if some people might make an unfortunate association or put it in a context in which it was not intended.”
The scene is about a playful, albeit morbid game that a loving family plays together. But will the connotations bring up painful thoughts for audience members fresh off the heels of Newtown?
What do U think? Should he cut the scene?
