There’s nothing better than being recognized for your strengths, especially when it’s by Michelle Obama, and Thom Browne can definitely agree with that!
Last Friday the designer was part of a very special White House moment as he joined other designers in Washington to be honored by Miz Obama.
Mr. Browne took home an award in the category of the Smithsonian├óΓé¼Γäós Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards, and said he was “overwhelmed by the experience”. Thom explained:
“This ranks as one of the most special awards because of the nature of receiving it among so many other designers. That├óΓé¼Γäós what makes it special for all of us. I did not go to design school. I left school and didn├óΓé¼Γäót know what I wanted to do. Here I am now winning a design award and going to the White House.”
Thom pinpointed the First Lady saying that he “really understands that she is on a huge platform”:
“It is so nice that she sees her role and importance and actually helps American designers, especially young designers. She is so conscious about using where she is in a really good way, in a very helpful way, by the clothing she wears and supporting younger and newer designers ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ I├óΓé¼Γäóm not a younger designer but I am one of the newer designers ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ I think she is very generous in being very conscious in that way.”
Michelle, who was dressed in a white sheath dress and Alexis Bittar statement necklace, took the stage and championed the designers as “pushing the boundaries, creating and revealing beauty where we least expect it and helping us all lead healthier, more sustainable lives.”
MObama went on to say each and every one of them “have done something really good for our country and our world…their work affects just about every aspect of our lives.”
What an awesome way to be honored!
FLOTUS must’ve really put a smile on the fashioner and all the other great designers who were in attendance.
We don’t know about you, but even a simple “good job” from the First Lady would’ve made our hearts melt!
