Do NOT interrupt the first lady. Ever.
As it happens, Michelle Obama was in the middle of her 20-minute speech at a Democratic fundraiser in Washington D.C. tuesday when a gay-rights activist reportedly decided to butt in and speak her mind.
The heckler, later identified as Ellen Sturtz, a member of the GetEQUAL campaign group, demanded that President Obama sign an executive order in favor of federal equality.
Of course, Michelle didn’t just brush this off. She walked directly up to the protester and said:
“One of the things I don’t do well is this.”
She then told Ellen that she had a choice: “listen to me or you can take the mic, but I’m leaving. You all decide. You have one choice.├óΓé¼┬¥
The rest of the audience roared in support of the first lady, while a fellow attendee informed Ellen it was time for her to leave. She didn’t go quietly, yelling that she was a “lesbian looking for federal equality before I die.”
Following the protestor’s departure, Michelle finished her speech, receiving huge applause from those present — people who had paid $500 to $10,000 to attend, might we add.
The fight for gay rights is one that strikes particularly close to home, but being rude and disrespectful to the first lady is not the way to go.
