What’s in a name? Apparently a lot of offended customers, if said name is Celebutard!
Sephora has been selling “Celebutard” lipstick from Kat Von D‘s Painted Love line, and has received a plethora of complaints from organizations like Down Syndrome Uprising, Family Member, Inclusion BC, and All About Developmental Disabilities about the insensitive name choice.
“Celebutard” is apparently a mashup of the words “celebrity” and “retard,” which has prompted major concern from many customers.
Kim Stagliano, managing editor of Age of Autism, voiced the following:
“People with disabilities are the last to benefit from what some might call ‘political correctness,’ and what I would call basic human decency. ‘Retard’ is still bandied about.”
After a few days of silence, Sephora finally responded by pulling the product from their shelves and releasing the following statement:
“It has come to our attention that the name of one shade of a lipstick we carry has caused offense to some of our clients and others. We are deeply sorry for that, and we have ceased sale of that shade both in our stores and online.”
Kat Von D apparently had something to say as well, and reportedly tweeted then quickly deleted the following:
“At the end of the day, it’s just a f**king lipstick”
Yikes!!
Maybe next time go for a safer lipstick moniker, gurl!
