Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson‘s views on homosexuality aren’t winning him a lot of friends lately.
But after A&E decided to suspend their star, he does have at least one new maverick on his side- Sarah Palin.
The former Vice Presidential candidate, who incidentally will have another reality show on air soon, has jumped to Phil’s defense.
She tweeted:
Free speech is endangered species; those "intolerants" hatin' & taking on Duck Dynasty patriarch for voicing personal opinion take on us all
— Sarah Palin (@SarahPalinUSA) December 19, 2013
What with being able to see Russia from her house and all, you’d think Sarah would be able to spot bigotry. But it seems she’s less interested in defending equal rights than in defending freedom of speech.
The thing Sarah doesn’t seem to get is that no one is forcing Phil to stop speaking. No one is imprisoning him or holding a gun to his head.
But being on TV isn’t an inalienable right. If people don’t want to watch someone espouse backward, hurtful world views, they can choose to watch something else.
Voting with your dollars isn’t oppression; that’s just capitalism in action.
With the viewers go the sponsors, and A&E knows it. Being on the right side of history? It’s just good business.
