Bretange (pronounced like “Britney”) is a real American hero dog!
She’s a 15-year-old golden retriever, and she’s believed to be the last living 9/11 search and rescue dog.
Bretange and her owner, Denise Corliss, went on their first deployment 13 years ago today: to ground zero of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The most tear jerky thing isn’t the search work that Bretange did at ground zero, though.
It was the therapeutic support the pup provided simply by being a loving dog on the sidelines.
When depressed, exhausted rescue workers were off “the pile” and taking a break, it was Bretange who would bring a smile back to their ash-smeared faces.
We’re sorry, excuse us a moment, we’ve got something in both our eyes.
