Activists Seek To Reform Health In Schools

Nearly one in three young Americans is overweight or obese, and despite the efforts of the government and non-profits, the problem only seems to be getting worse.
Enter DoSomething.org and athlete Laila Ali. They are launching a program where students are incentivized to brainstorm and implement ideas to improve health in their school. The contest will run through October, and winning students will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
Said Ali:

“From a very young age, I’ve learned the importance of exercise and giving your body the fuel it needs to stay strong. I am excited to be part of a campaign encouraging kids to take control of their own future by tackling this issue where it starts, in our nation’s schools.”

This is a brilliant idea because it empowers the very kids struggling with their weight to do something about it — it builds confidence and opens up new doors for healthier schools.
