Well, that was quick!
After just 3 hours of deliberation, the jury came to a unanimous verdict in the murder trial of Alex Murdaugh, finding him GUILTY for the murders of his wife and son.
The defense immediately motioned for a declaration of mistrial and to set aside the verdict, asking for a directed verdict instead. Judge Clifton Newman said he agreed the jury had amble time to review the evidence and that there was “an overwhelming amount” of it — and the motion was denied. He also told the jury:
“Circumstantial evidence, direct evidence, all of the evidence pointed to only one conclusion, and that’s the conclusion that you all reached. So I applaud you all for, as a group, and as a unit and individually, evaluating the evidence and coming to a proper conclusion as you saw the law, as you saw the facts.”
Among the evidence was, of course, the fact Murdaugh admitted on the stand to lying about his whereabouts at the time his son Paul and wife Maggie were murdered. He maintained he did not commit the murders, but at that point his credibility was significantly damaged.

Murdaugh was also found guilty of two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He was then remanded to custody and taken away. The former South Carolina attorney is now facing sentencing, with prosecutors indicating they will NOT seek the death penalty, but rather life in prison without the possibility of parole. Murdaugh has yet to stand trial for his other alleged crimes, nearly a hundred counts of financial charges such as defrauding past clients and the government of millions of dollars.
