Disney Channel‘s Joshua Rush couldn’t be prouder of the work he’s doing on Andi Mack.
As we previously reported, the House of Mouse made history after the tween-centric dramedy focused on a coming out storyline for its second season premiere — a first for the Disney Channel.

The actor who portrayed this powerful story was none other than 15-year-old Rush. While most performers would be intimidated to take on such an important plot line, Joshua embraced his character’s revelation with open arms. For an interview with People, the up-and-comer shared:

“It’s important that everybody gets representation and that anybody having thoughts on who they are is able to see that represented on TV and to be shown that’s okay. I think [my character] Cyrus feels different, and I think in our teenage years we all feel different at different times, so it’s important to show anyone that Cyrus is comfortable with who he is and is happy with who he is.”

Well said, Joshua. Well said.
The journey Joshua’s character, named Cyrus, underwent is certainly impactful as the network depicted his path as one filled with love and support from friends. In fact, the teenager is hopeful that his portrayal of a coming out journey will help those struggling with their identity.
Rush continued:

“I think this storyline is definitely going to help a lot of my peers. I was the first person that one of my good friends came out to, and I think that if I had someone like Buffy on TV, I think I would’ve done a better job and had been a better friend in that situation. I’m glad that I can be a part of this.”

How insightful!
In order to properly tell Cyrus’ story, the Andi Mack team worked closely with child development experts and LGBTQ organizations — including Common Sense Media, GLAAD, and PFLAG.
Well, we think they hit this one out of the park!
As for the future of TV?? Joshua hopes other programs follow in Disney’s trailblazing footsteps, as he concluded:

“I hope that more shows will follow in Disney’s footsteps with Cyrus’ storyline. Really, I look forward to the day that it’s not an unusual occurrence. I hope everyone can one day see that our differences are beautiful and that love is love.”

Hear! Hear!
