The Oscar snubs were rough this year, that’s for sure. But at least Selena Gomez and Zendaya got them some diamond-shaped consolation prizes.
For Angelina Jolie, however, not being nominated is a much deeper, more upsetting loss. Instead of adding insult to injury, it’s both the insult AND the injury! At least that’s what an insider says about the unexpected whiff.
The “senior awards source” told Page Six Thursday afternoon the 49-year-old — who previously won Supporting Actress for Girl Interrupted and was nominated a few years later for Changeling — really wanted this one:
“Angelina will be devastated… look at all the press she did for the film — she wanted to get nominated. She did Jimmy Fallon, her first late-night show in over a decade. She even went to the Gotham awards. She did all these magazine covers.”
It’s true, Angelina did really seem to be playing the game this time, more than she had in… maybe ever??
Angie played opera singer Maria Callas in Netflix‘s Maria. A music biopic is so often a sure thing. And directed by Pablo Larrain, who got his last two leading ladies — Natalie Portman in Jackie and Kristen Stewart in Spencer — to nods. And then there’s all that press that she hates… Yeah, we believe she wanted it.

But it’s not just the snub, it’s what it potentially represents for Angie. A movie industry source spelled it out — to her it’s evidence Brad Pitt won Tinseltown in the divorce. The insider explained:
“This just shows that Hollywood is Team Brad. The Globes showed that the foreign press loves her, but that’s not Hollywood. Nobody was going to go against Brad and give Angelina a vote… people just love Brad.”
Oof! That’s so harsh… But we can absolutely see how she could read the situation that way. After all, Brad got his first acting Oscar for 2019’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. That was three years after their very public split AND after the first reports of the airplane abuse incident.
And while he was great in the film, that was hardly awards bait. They just… wanted to give the man a statue. And it’s fair for her to feel like they just don’t want to give her one. Huh. Does it mean they don’t believe her side of the abuse story? What must she be thinking? The mind reels.
Another source brushed off that line of thinking though, telling the outlet:
“The divorce is done, and yes, politics do come into play a little alongside the films and the performances. But the fact is that there are a lot of first-time nominees shows that we still have a healthy industry.”
It’s true, Angie wasn’t the only older actress who was snubbed when it came to awards this year. As to whether that means we have a “healthy” Hollywood, we don’t know about all that.
What do YOU think, Perezcious readers??
