Avril Lavigne Says Her New Album Was Inspired By 'Accepting' She 'Was Going To Die' -- DETAILS

Avril Lavigne

Avril Lavigne is healthy, happy and stepping back into the spotlight.
Five years after her last self-titled studio album, the Canadian singer returns with a new record titled, Head Above Water.
Lavigne’s battle with Lyme’s disease, a potentially life-threatening condition that is contracted by blacklegged ticks, has kept her out of the public eye for the last five years.

In a press release for her new music, Lavigne recalls how the challenging illness once took a turn for the worse:

“One night I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die. My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed, ‘God, please help me to keep my head above the water.'”

The moments that followed after though, were filled with inspiration:

“In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.”

Thankfully, the 33-year-old turned her brush with death into something positive — new music that fans have been waiting for.
