Looks like France isn’t the only country hoping to make wearing the traditional Muslim garb illegal.
Belgium is apparently this close to banning the burka.
On Tuesday, the parliamentary committee agreed to outlaw wearing the burkas in public and is now on its way to the full Parliament for a vote later this month. If passed, Belgium will be the first European country to do so.
Daniel Bacquelaine, the bill’s chief promoter, estimates only 100 women of the 650,000 Muslim population in the country actually wear the facial veils, but the trend is rising.
The hope the banning of the clothing “that covers all or most of the face” in public “sends a very strong signal to radical Islamists.”
