Billie Eilish sadly knows what it is like to feel “pain” all the time — even at a young age.
In a November cover story for Vogue published on Tuesday, the 22-year-old singer opened up about the toll performing takes on her body. Over the years, she has suffered her fair share of physical injuries on stage. Mainly, they’ve been related to hypermobility — where her joints bend beyond the normal range of motion. Ouch.

But unfortunately, this is nothing new to Billie. She has been battling with her body for a long time. The Lunch artist revealed:
“I’ve basically been in pain since I was nine. Growing up, I’d always hear people be like, ‘Just wait until you’re older! You’re going to have so much pain!’ And I remember being so furious.”
Oof. And Billie was not just dealing with her physical pain. She also was struggling mentally. Although the Grammy winner performs for thousands of fans, there were times when she felt very isolated on tour:
“I’ve had some really dark times on tour. For a long time I was kind of living like it was temporary. Like, yeah, I’m touring for now and it’s kind of unpleasant, and whatever. It’ll be over. And the truth is, it’s the rest of my life.”
Touring is normally part of the job of being a pop star — unless you pull a Miley Cyrus. But don’t worry, Billie isn’t giving up singing for her fans! It took some time, but Billie eventually realized that touring could be fun:
“I didn’t realize that I could make touring enjoyable. I just was very lonely for many years, and I’m not interested in that anymore. I want to enjoy the show as well as my days.”
