EXCLUSIVE! Billy Gilman On Being Country Music's Openly Gay Male Star: 'It Shouldn't Matter'

Pop music has Adam Lambert. R&B has Frank Ocean.
But country music didn’t have an openly gay/bisexual star until Billy Gilman came out late last year.
The now 26-year-old rose to fame when he was just 11, after releasing the hit single One Voice. He appeared on Oprah and was even nominated for a Grammy!
And while he’s been in the spotlight for most of his life, there was one thing he kept in the dark: his sexuality.

We caught up with Billy at the opening of the Flaming Saddles Saloon in West Hollywood, where he talked about a run-in with a journalist that prompted him to come out, how scared he was to do so, and how his family and fans reacted.
And as for being a trailblazer in the traditionally conservative country music scene, he said:

There comes a point where some people have to buck up and be a voice for certain situations!

Plus, as a bonus, check out WeHo mayor John D’Amico presenting Billy with a declaration for Billy Gilman Day!
Flaming Saddles (and it’s owners Jacqui Squatriglia & Chris Barnes) was also honored and proceeds from the night benefited the LGBT Center.

We’re so glad Billy found his one voice!
