Zoo Basel in Switzerland just welcomed a new baby hippo on July 17th!!
22-year-old mama Helvetia gave birth to the little babe in a ditch in her outdoor enclosure.
After the wee baby was born, 23-year-old Wilhelm, the papa, tried to sneak a peak at his baby, but mama Helvetia was having none of that!
She kept shooing him away, because she’s super protective of her new baby.
What’s crazy is the baby has to dive underwater to be able to drink his mama’s milk! He resurfaces every 30 seconds for a breath of fresh air.
That sounds tiring!!
He’ll be eating solid foods in a few weeks, but for now, it’s all about diving down and getting a meal.
The baby hippo is the tenth baby for the hippo parents but he’s still just as special and unique as any of the other babies!!
So cute!
