It has been confirmed.
Ariel Castro, the prime suspect in the Cleveland Kidnapping Case, has been identified as the father of his victim Amanda Berry‘s child.
Amanda was the woman who originally escaped from the house that imprisoned her and two other women for ten years. Berry was able to get out along with her six-year-old daughter. That led to the rescue of the two other victims, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus.
Castro’s DNA sample was delivered to Ohio crime investigators yesterday afternoon, and those samples confirm that Castro is the one who fathered Berry’s daughter.
Here’s what the attorney general said:
“Forensic scientists worked throughout the night to confirm that Castro is the father of the six-year-old girl born in captivity to one of the kidnapping victims.”
Castro’s bail has been set at $8 million dollars and the prime suspect has been placed under suicide watch. Prosecutors are trying to decide whether they will pursue the death penalty against Castro.
Here’s what the lead prosecutor said:
“Capital punishment must be reserved for those crimes that are truly the worst examples of human conduct. The reality is we still have brutal criminals in our midst who have no respect for the rule of law or human life.”
Officials are using Castro’s DNA sample to determine if the suspect can be linked to any other crimes in the nation.
