It’s hard to imagine any artist refusing to let the FOX hit TV show, Glee, use their music. But travel back a year and half ago, when Lea Michele was on no one’s radar but “Springers”, and there was one notable band that insisted the show DIDN’T use their music.
That would be Coldplay.
Back to the present, the show has found MAJOR success in the ratings and on the charts and Chris Martin & Co. are retracting their rejection.
Ryan Murphy, creator of Glee, explains:
“At the beginning a lot of people didn’t know what we were and asked to see pages [in advance], but I refused because I didn’t want to set precedent of them having any involvement. My favorite rejection was Bryan Adams. Coldplay and Bryan Adams were really the only rejections. But Coldplay called a week ago and said, ‘We’re sorry, you can have our catalog.'”
Smart move. The Glee kids are starting to become very lucrative for not only themselves, but for the writers and publishers of the songs they cover.
