SoCal Army Veteran Beaten To Death Outside His MAGA-Themed House -- Navy Vet Pleads Not Guilty To Charges

[Warning: Potentially Triggering Content]

A heartbreaking and deeply disturbing case out of Southern California is sparking outrage and raising a whole lot of questions after a 69-year-old Army veteran known in his neighborhood for his patriotic pro-Donald Trump displays died following a violent assault outside his home.

Kerry George Sheron, a longtime resident of the SoCal beach city of Escondido — whose house had reportedly become locally famous as the “Trump House” because of its wall-to-wall outdoor shrine to the president — has succumbed to his injuries days after he was brutally attacked outside his home

Friends and family say Sheron proudly decorated his yard with American flags and MAGA memorabilia for years, and neighbors apparently knew exactly where he stood politically whenever they drove down his street.

Now, a 32-year-old Navy veteran named Thomas Caleb Butler has been arrested in connection to the horrifying incident. Police have not publicly revealed a motive, and that uncertainty is only adding to the tension surrounding this tragedy.

According to officials, the violent encounter happened back on May 20 around 2:14 in the afternoon outside Sheron’s Escondido home. Officers responded to reports of an assault already in progress and discovered the elderly victim suffering from devastating injuries. Another bystander who reportedly attempted to intervene was also hurt during the chaos.

Authorities say Butler allegedly fled the scene on foot before police arrived, but officers quickly searched the surrounding neighborhood and located a suspect matching witness descriptions, according to a police statement:

“Upon arrival, officers located an elderly male suffering from significant injuries. A bystander who intervened during the incident was also injured. Officers learned the suspect had fled the area on foot prior to their arrival.”

Sheron was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, where he later died on Sunday. An autopsy is still pending to officially determine the cause and manner of death.

The accused suspect is currently being held without bail in San Diego County. Before Sheron passed away, Butler had reportedly been booked on suspicion of attempted murder, elder abuse, battery, and making criminal threats. Prosecutors are now reviewing whether the charges should be upgraded following the victim’s death. A decision is expected at Butler’s next court appearance in early June.

The police revealed more in a statement to the media:

“The case is in the process of being presented to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, which is reviewing the circumstances to determine whether charges will be amended.”

BTW, according to brand-new reports from ABC News and others on Thursday, Butler has now officially pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, even as authorities continue reviewing the case following Sheron’s death.

What makes this case even more emotional is the picture friends and loved ones are painting of Sheron in the aftermath of his death. His wife, Maria Garcia, spoke through tears while remembering the man she says dedicated his life to both his country and his faith, telling local news outlets:

“I want to remember my husband, you know, how he was [a] very good man, you know, [his] service in the church, service in the army.”

Meanwhile, one of Sheron’s close friends revealed that the veteran’s political displays had allegedly been targeted before. According to Jim Gillie, vandalism and hostile reactions from passing drivers were sadly not uncommon:

“Back in March, people came through with razor blades and cut up a bunch of Kerry’s flags. Kerry was used to it because he’d come out here with his Trump signs and stuff during the week and flags, and people would drive by and honk and wave, and most of the people are good, but when someone would flip him off, he’d just look at me and say, they have their right to freedom of speech, too.”

A GoFundMe campaign launched by Sheron’s family has already raised tens of thousands of dollars to help cover funeral expenses. In the fundraiser, relatives described the deadly incident as “brutal and unprovoked.”
