The folks at Queen Creek High School in Arizona are apparently HUGE fans of Duck Dynasty and decided to pay tribute to their favorite show by having their own “Redneck Day!”
Not surprisingly, more than a few people were offended!
What started as an innocent shout-out has now become a federal investigation as the Department of Education is looking into whether or not the holiday created a “racially hostile environment.”
One of the main issues that sparked controversy was a student who wore a Confederate flag to the event, which brought on complaints from students and civil rights activists alike.
The school’s superintendent Tom Lindsey spoke out about the incident and explained there was “no ill intent” by the student who wore the Confederate flag. He also said that the student was originally from a state where the flag was more prevalent.
Feds are looking into the incident, but things get a little tricky when it comes to whether or not the student should actually be allowed to wear the garment in question.
Technically, he was perfectly within his rights to wear the Confederate flag due to his right to freedom of speech. However, the question is whether or not his actions are protected by the First Ammendment because they created a racially hostile environment.
Regardless of what the feds decide, it seems ridiculous that the school would even promote something called “redneck day” and then be surprised when people are offended!
Someone probably should have thought that through!
