Prepare yourselves, because this is probably one of the saddest things you’ll read all day.
The bodies of nearly 800 children are believed to be buried in a sceptic tank in Tuam, Ireland where a house for illegitimate children and their mothers used to stand.
The building, simply known as “The Home,” functioned from 1925 to 1961 and was mainly meant for unmarried pregnant women who had been ostracized for having premarital sex.
While this concept may seem foreign to some, houses like this were not too uncommon in places like Ireland, where getting pregnant before you’re married is a VERY big no-no.
The Home was largely overcrowded and living conditions were far from ideal, as numerous children died from malnutrition, neglect, or various diseases such as tuberculosis, measles, and pneumonia.
Back in 1944, a local health board ran an investigation of The Home and described many of the children as “emaciated,” “fragile,” and “pot-bellied.” So the question is, why hasn’t anything been said or done about these horrific living conditions??
The sad truth is many of the mothers who used The Home STILL have not come forward because they are afraid of the stigma attached to being an unwed mother.
The Home has been closed and destroyed for quite some time now, however, the mass grave where the children are buried is still there and is reportedly “filled to the brim with human skulls and bones.” In fact, some locals believe there very well may be even MORE than 800 bodies buried there.
Hopefully we’ll get more answers soon on how living conditions like this were EVER deemed acceptable.
