Emmy Nominations 2019 -- SNUBS & SURPRISES!

The 2019 Emmy nominations have arrived, and as always there’s a lot that just makes you go… huh?!?

That includes the (sadly) perennial disrespect to some fantastic shows and individual performances from the past year in TV.

But there were also a few nods which had us pleasantly (or in one case not so pleasantly) scratching our heads!

See all the snubs and surprises (below)!

SURPRISE! – Game Of Thrones

OK, obviously we aren’t shocked the show picked up a record 32 nominations for its final season. The acting, the craftsmanship, so much of what had made the show an award favorite for so long was as good as it had ever been. However… one of those nominations was for OUTSTANDING WRITING for the final episode. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were roundly criticized for rushing the final season, leading to a finale full of unearned emotional beats and twists. It is widely considered one of the worst episodes in the show’s history, and all the blame has fallen squarely on the writing. So is this just an honorary nod to the creators for giving viewers years of peerless content?

SNUB! – Julia Roberts

Many viewers of this twisty Prime Video thriller thought Julia Roberts was a shoo-in for a nom. The Oscar winner has to swing wildly across the emotional spectrum, playing a counselor at two VERY different times in her life in flashbacks and flashforwards.

SURPRISE! – Schitt’s Creek

It’s rare for a series to take so long to make a splash during award season. But Schitt’s Creek has proven to be the little sitcom that could, surviving on POP TV long enough to become the best version of itself. Now in its fifth (and penultimate — Season Six is officially the last) season, the show finally got its first ever Emmy love. In addition to the Comedy Series nod, stars Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara, who have starred in countless movies together — Best In ShowA Mighty Wind, etc. — are both up for Lead awards as well!

SNUB! – D’Arcy Carden

Fans of The Good Place already know what a scene stealer D’Arcy Carden is. But in a killer episode of Season Three, she had to play not just her usual two roles of Good Janet and Bad Janet but also EVERY OTHER CHARACTER ON THE SHOW! (It’s a long story, and frankly if you aren’t already watching The Good Place, what are you doing??)

SNUB! – The Good Fight

The spinoff to the The Good Wife has just never gotten the award recognition of the original, despite the fact many viewers consider it the superior show! Not to mention national frickin’ treasure Christine Baranski!

SURPRISE! – Christina Applegate

We LOVE Christina Applegate, but… do you even know what she’s nominated for without looking it up? We’re guessing over half of you probably don’t. She’s up for Lead Actress In A Comedy for her role as a widow in Netflix’s Dead To Me. The quirky series only premiered in May, giving it an INCREDIBLY quick leap into the awards conversation. Better jump on it now, it’s already been picked up for Season Two!

SNUB! – The Haunting Of Hill House

The Haunting Of Hill House Emmy Snub

The Haunting Of Hill House has tearjerking scenes with emotional depth on the level of This Is Us, a cast of outstanding actors, and a level of technical mastery rarely seen on television (seriously, Episode Six is an hourlong magic trick). So why the snub?? We’d say Emmy voters are dismissing this amazing piece of filmmaking as trashy horror, but considering the love given to AHS in years past that doesn’t really make sense. So honestly we’re stumped.
