Vogue Italia’s editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani joined supermodel Doutzen Kroes, media mogul Arianna Huffington and Amber Valletta at Harvard University on Monday to talk about body image in the media.
During the discussion, Sozzani, a long-time proponent of healthy body image, flat out blamed fashion as “one of the causes of anorexia“.
Here are some of the HIGHlights from Franca’s speech:

On the rhetorical question of why the fashion industry has imposed a thin standard of beauty:
“Why the age of supermodels, who were beautiful and womanly, slowly started decreasing and we now have still undeveloped adolescents with no sign of curves? Why is this considered beautiful?’
On why young girls accept thinness as the ideal:
“One of the reasons why a girl starts a too-strict diet is the necessity to correspond to an aesthetic standard which rewards thinness. And the current inclination to embrace a female beauty standard that exalts thinness has devastating consequences on many adolescents├óΓé¼Γäó eating habits.’

Sozanni also announced Vogue Italia will continue to promote healthy aesthetics with an entire issue featuring models of all shapes and sizes.
BRAVO! We can’t wait to get our hands on that one!
