Wow! Really crazy, when you think what could have been!
According to the upcoming article in Vanity Fair‘s latest issue, called Oral History of Friends, the cast and crew of the NBC smash look back at the now-iconic series that ran for ten years, and how in the development process, it was a MUCH different show…with a MUCH different cast!
According to former NBC exec Karey Burke:

“‘Six of One’ was the name of the show during the pilot. Then [series creators] [Marta] Kauffman and [David] Crane came back with ‘Friends,’ which we thought was such a snore. Some people thought the show was too Gen X, way too narrow.”

Meanwhile, Nancy McKeon from The Facts of Life nearly played Monica, while Courteney Cox had Jennifer Aniston‘s role as Rachel, and Craig Bierko was signed to play Chandler!
And where was Matthew Perry? Apparently, signed to appear in a show called ├óΓé¼┼ôLAX 2194├óΓé¼┬¥ – about baggage handlers in the future!
What ON EARTH?!
And furthermore, according to Matt LeBlanc, the cast was JUST as pissed about the terrible Joey/Rachel romantic storyline as the rest of the fans!
He explains:

“It felt wildly inappropriate. [The cast] got super-defensive about the whole thing.”

Understandbly so! It just did NOT work, and it betrayed the way the characters had been written thus far!
But hey! Out of ten years, and all the other possible casting choices and creative decisions, we think if that was one of the worst offenses, then so be it!
Gah! We miss that show so much!
How about U?!
