Everything we know about Friends character Phoebe Buffay’s love life just got tossed into the air!!
The off-the-wall, free-spirited member of the Friends clique, played by Lisa Kudrow, ended up with Mike Hannigan (above), the crap bag man of her dreams played by a young (but exactly the same looking) Paul Rudd.
But as we just learned, things were NOT supposed to go down that way!

In an interview this week with the Huffington Post, Hank Azaria — the actor who played David, the bespectacled scientist who was Phoebe’s first serious relationship — revealed that his character was actually supposed to return triumphantly and win Phoebe back!
The only problem is… it never happened, and it’s all because of Rudd’s charm and charisma!
Azaria made the big reveal, saying:
“The plan always was kind of to bring [David] back. I think, honestly, what happened was Paul Rudd is so awesome that they sort of found a groove with him and [my character] became more of just the grist for that mill. As opposed to the other way around.”
Awww!!

Sure, Azaria has had a successful career and it’s all just a TV show anyways, but the longtime actor reveals it did hurt when producers decided to stick with Mike as opposed to returning to David:
“It actually did sting a little bit. Whatever part of me is David the science guy who went to Minsk, which admittedly is probably a small part of me [laughs], but that part of me wanted to end up with Phoebe. So I was sort of sad when I didn’t.”
Then again, Azaria couldn’t stop speaking highly of Rudd in the same interview, so maybe Phoebe the production team made the right choice!

Azaria said:
“He certainly has gone on to prove that he was comedically deserving of Phoebe’s love. He’s a handsome devil. He’s actually annoyingly handsome. He shouldn’t really be allowed to be that handsome. He’s like the Tom Brady of comedy.”
LOLz!!
Just imagine how Phoebe’s story would have been different had the producers gone with their original plan…
And hey, who knows, perhaps it might have altered Rudd’s exceptional career, too!
